Q: My grandmother previously suckled me while she was married to my grandfather, my mother’s father. After my grandfather passed away, my grandmother married a man and nursed a woman who was under his protection. This woman, who was nursed by my grandmother, also nursed my cousin. The scholars have differed in interpreting this nursing relationship. I ask Allah, and then I ask you, my esteemed scholar, to answer my question: Is my cousin a valid wife for me, given that she was nursed by the woman who was nursed by my grandmother, or by my mother? Please note that she was not under the protection of the man who was under his protection when she was nursed. Please inform me, may Allah reward you with the best reward. .
A: The nursing that results in prohibition is five sucklings or more within the first two years. A single suckling is when the child holds the breast and sucks milk from it that reaches his stomach, and then he lets go. If he returns and sucks milk from it again, it is considered
a second suckling, and so on. Therefore, if your nursing from the aforementioned grandmother was five sucklings or more within the two years, and the nursing of the woman whose daughter you wish to marry from your grandmother was also five sucklings or more within the two years, and the nursing of the daughter you wish to marry was also five sucklings or more within the two years, then it is forbidden for you to marry her; because through this nursing, she becomes your sister’s daughter through nursing. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:23] up to His saying: [An-Nisa 4:23] , and He said: [Al-Baqarah 2:233] , and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam) agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. It is also established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: “Among what was revealed in the Qur’an was: ‘Ten known sucklings prohibit marriage.’ Then it was abrogated by: ‘Five known sucklings.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter remained as such. And if the nursing of any of you is less than that, or not within the two years, then it is permissible for you to marry her.”
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers
