Ruling on Keeping Pictures for Remembrance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother Abdullah Awadh al-Azami from 'Afiq sent five questions to His Eminence the Shaykh.
His first question says: What is the ruling on collecting photographic pictures of living beings for remembrance?
Answer: It is not permissible to collect pictures of living beings for remembrance; rather, they must be destroyed. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) :
Spare no portrait unwiped outلا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
And since it is established in the hadith of Jabir in al-Tirmidhi and others that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade pictures in the house and making them, all pictures kept for remembrance must be destroyed by tearing them up or burning them. One should only keep a picture that is necessary, such as the picture on an ID card or similar items where there is a necessity to keep it. Otherwise, it is obligatory to destroy them. Yes.
