Ruling on Collecting Pictures for the Purpose of Remembrance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Is it permissible to collect pictures for the purpose of remembrance, or is it not?

A: It is not permissible for any Muslim, male or female, to collect pictures for remembrance, meaning pictures of living beings from among the children of Adam and others. Rather, they must be destroyed; for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) :
Spare no portrait unwiped out, and leave not a high grave unlevelled.لا تدع صورة إلا طمستها ولا قبرًا مشرفًا إلا سويته
Riyad as-Salihin 1687

It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prohibited pictures in the house. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Ka'bah on the day of the Conquest, he saw pictures on its walls, so he asked for water and a garment, then wiped them away. As for pictures of inanimate objects, such as mountains and trees and the like, there is nothing wrong with them.
