Is it said of the one who abandons prayer: that he is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah)?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This message reached us from Musafir Lafi al-Atibi, who says: I request that this message of mine be presented to His Eminence Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz. He says: What is the meaning of this verse that appeared in Surat al-Rum:
and establish prayer and do not be of those who associate others with Allah (32) [Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sectsوَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَلا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ۝ مِنَ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا
[al-Rum: 31-32]? And is it said of the one who abandons prayer: that he is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah)?
Answer: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة، فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
, and it is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from the hadith of Jabir. This indicates that the one who abandons prayer is called: a kafir (disbeliever), and is called: a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), and this is the truth, and it is the well-known position of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). For Abdullah ibn Shaqiq al-Aqili (may Allah be pleased with him and have mercy on him), the noble Tabi'i, said: (I did not see the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) count anything whose abandonment is kufr (disbelief) except prayer). This indicates that prayer, in the view of the Companions, its abandonment is considered kufr (disbelief), meaning: major shirk (associating partners with Allah), and he is called: a kafir (disbeliever) and a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah). So the one who abandoned prayer has divided his religion, and has left off from the community of Muslims, and he has become deserving of being killed if he does not repent; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The blood of a Muslim man, who testifies that none has the right to be worshipped Allah, is not lawful except for one of three cases: The (previously married or) married adulterer, a life for a life, and the one who leaves the religion and parts from the Jama'ah (the community of Muslims.)لا يحل دم امرئ مسلم يشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، وأني رسول الله، إلا بإحدى ثلاث: الثيب الزاني، والنفس بالنفس، والتارك لدينه المفارق للجماعة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1402Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So the one who abandons prayer is considered one who has abandoned his religion and separated from the community. We ask Allah for well-being and safety. Yes.
