The Criterion for Judging Islamic Sects

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: In this time, the sects have multiplied, and each one claims to be upon the truth. We ask you to be generous and give us a criterion from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by which every person who is sincere to himself may act. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The criterion is to proceed according to what the Noble Qur'an and the pure Sunnah indicate, and upon which the Salaf of the Ummah, the Companions, and those who followed their path walked. One looks into the words of the scholars if he has knowledge, following the path of the Companions and those who followed them with excellence, and judging by the Shari'ah of Allah by following the Book and the Sunnah. This is the path, this is the path of salvation, and this is the belief of the people of the Sunnah and the community: proceeding according to what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) proceeded upon, and acting upon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him), and being upright upon that in speech, action, and creed. If he has ignorance, he asks the scholars; if he does not have knowledge, he asks the scholars of his time. He inquires about them... he seeks out the scholars, the people of insight, the people of the Sunnah and the community who are known for good, and asks them about what is difficult for him. This is the path of salvation: to be upright upon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in speech and action. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said in His great Book:
And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow itوَأَنَّ هَذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ
[Al-An'am: 153]. He (the Exalted) said:
Guide us to the straight path -اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
[Al-Fatihah: 6]. He (the Exalted) said:
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messengerفَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ
[Al-Nisa: 59]. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
And in anything over which you disagree - its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah.وَمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِيهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَحُكْمُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ
[Al-Shura: 10].
This is the path of Allah, and the straight path: it is the oneness of Allah and sincerity to Him, and proceeding upon the methodology upon which the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded and remained upright with their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and after him, and upon which the people of the Sunnah and the community followed them in speech, action, and creed.
