Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He asks Your Eminence, saying: What are the beneficial books that, if a student of knowledge relies on them, they suffice him from the rest of the books?

Answer:
The greatest book, and the most important book, is the Great Qur'an. It is the greatest of books, the most important book, the most beneficial book. The Book of Allah contains guidance and light, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitableإِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ
[Al-Isra: 9]. And He said—(Exalted and Majestic is He):
And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَى لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ
[An-Nahl: 89]. And He the Exalted said:
And this [Qur'an] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.وَهَذَا كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مُبَارَكٌ فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَاتَّقُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
[Al-An'am: 155]. So the greatest of books, the most truthful, the most beneficial, the most precious, and the most perfect is the Book of Allah. We advise every Muslim man and every Muslim woman in the entire world to take care of the Qur'an. We advise everyone to take care of the Book of Allah by memorizing it, reflecting upon it, understanding it, acting upon it, and asking scholars about whatever is difficult in it. If a student of knowledge looks at books of tafsir to benefit from them, such as Ibn Jarir's tafsir, Ibn Kathir's tafsir, al-Baghawi's tafsir, al-Shawkani's tafsir, and al-Qurtubi's tafsir, he should benefit from these tafsirs regarding the meanings of the words of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He learns and benefits from these books.
Likewise, books of hadith, such as al-Bukhari, Muslim, and the four Sunan. He benefits from these great books, such as Muntakha al-Akhbar by Ibn Taymiyyah, Bulugh al-Maram by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, and 'Umdat al-Hadith by Shaykh 'Abd al-Ghani ibn 'Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi. These are important books of hadith. Likewise, Muwatta Malik, Musnad Ahmad, and Sunan al-Darimi. They are all beneficial, great books.
However, if he does not have knowledge, he should ask the scholars. He should not rely on his own opinion. Rather, the student of knowledge who has fiqh in the religion and has knowledge benefits from these books. If he is a layman who does not have knowledge by which he can distinguish the authentic hadith from the weak one, he asks the scholars. He asks the scholars about whatever is difficult for him, he takes care of the Qur'an, he increases in reciting the Qur'an with reflection and understanding, and he asks his Lord for success, guidance, and assistance.
As for the scholars, they look into these books and benefit from them in interpreting the Book of Allah and in knowing the authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
