What is prescribed of dhikr and tasbih, whether specific or general

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence is asked about the dhikr and tasbih that suffice the Muslim, and about their form and their times. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Tasbih is of different types. Some of it is prescribed permanently, some is prescribed after the prayers, and some is prescribed within the prayer.
Among this is what Allah prescribed in the bowing and the prostration. In the bowing: "Subhan Rabbi al-Azim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent), and in the prostration: "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). And in both of them together: "Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li" (Glory be to You, O our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me), "Subuhun Quddus Rabb al-Mala'ikah wa al-Ruh" (The One who is free from all imperfections, the Holy One, Lord of the angels and the Spirit), "Subhan Dhi al-Jabrut wa al-Mulkut wa al-Kibriya' wa al-Adhamah" (Glory be to the Possessor of Might, Dominion, Majesty, and Greatness).
This is prescribed in both of them, the bowing and the prostration. And what is specific to the bowing is: "Subhan Rabbi al-Azim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent), and what is specific to the prostration is: "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High).
And among it is what is after the five prayers, which is that one says: "Subhan Allah, wa al-hamdu lillah, wa Allahu Akbar" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times after every prayer. The first thing one says after the taslim is: "Astaghfir Allah" (I seek forgiveness from Allah) three times. "Allahumma Anta al-Salam, wa minka al-Salam, tabarakta ya Dha al-Jalal wa al-Ikram" (O Allah, You are Peace, and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor). "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lah al-mulk, wa lah al-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir" (There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things Able). "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" (There is no power and no strength except by Allah). "La ilaha illa Allah, wa la na'budu illa Iyyah, lah al-ni'mah, wa lah al-fadl, wa lah al-thana' al-hasan" (There is no god but Allah, and we worship none but Him. His is the blessing, and His is the favor, and His is the good praise). "La ilaha illa Allah mukhlisin lahu al-din wa law kariha al-kafirun" (There is no god but Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, even if the disbelievers hate it). "Allahumma la mani'a lima atayta, wa la mu'tiya lima mana'ta, wa la yanfa'u Dha al-jaddi minka al-jadd" (O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You have given, and there is no one who can give what You have withheld, and the wealth of the wealthy does not benefit him against You).
This is prescribed after every prayer, from the five prayers, for the imam, the one praying behind him, and the one praying alone. All of this is established, some of it from the hadith of Thawban in Muslim, some of it from the hadith of Ibn al-Zubayr in Muslim, and some of it from the hadith of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah in the two Sahihs. Then he says: "Subhan Allah, wa al-hamdu lillah, wa Allahu Akbar" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times, after the five prayers: Fajr, Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, and 'Isha: "Subhan Allah, wa al-hamdu lillah, wa Allahu Akbar" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times.
This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided to in the authentic hadiths, and he informed that whoever does this will overtake those who came before him and be overtaken by those who came after him. This is the great virtue. And that is because the poor complained to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The people of wealth—meaning the people of money—have taken the rewards. They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, and they free slaves and we do not free slaves, and they give charity and we do not give charity—we have no money. He said:
Shall I not teach you something with which you may overtake those who surpassed you and with which you will surpass those who will come after you? None will excel you unless he who does which you do.
Riyad as-Salihin 1418
They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He said:
Extol Allah, declare His Greatness, and Praise Him thirty-three times after every prayer
Sahih Muslim 595a
This is a great virtue.
And in the authentic hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
to complete a hundred:" There is no god but Allah, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is praise due, and He is Potent over everything,"..
Sahih Muslim 597a
And in another narration:
He declares the greatness of Allah thirty-four times.
completing the hundred. Thirty-three tasbih, thirty-three tahmid, and thirty-four takbir. This is one type.
And the second type is completing the hundred with "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lah al-mulk, wa lah al-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir" (There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things Able). And in the other hadith, the hadith of the poor and the emigrants, the completion of the hundred was not mentioned.
So the Sunnah for the believer is to complete the hundred with "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lah al-mulk, wa lah al-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir" (There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things Able); because in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in Muslim, when one completes this: "His sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea." This is a great promise, meaning: if he is not persisting in major sins; meaning: in the absence of persistence. And if he completes it with thirty-four takbir, that is all good.
The point is: that he completes the ninety-nine with a takbir that is the thirty-fourth, or by saying: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lah al-mulk wa lah al-hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir" (There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things Able), and that is more complete.
And it is recommended for the believer every day to increase in takbir, tahlil, and takbir, and in the night as well, in all times. It is recommended for him to increase in the tasbih of Allah, His tahmid, His tahlil, and His takbir in all times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The dearest phrases to Allah are four: Subhan Allah (Hallowed be Allah), Al-Hamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illa-Allah (There is no deity but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greater).
Sahih Muslim 2137a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The uttering of (these words):" Exalted is Allah (He is free from imperfection), all praise is due to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest," is dearer to me than anything over which the sun rises.
Sahih Muslim 2695
narrated by Muslim.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "The words that remain are: Subhan Allah, wa al-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power and no strength except by Allah).
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever says: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, one hundred times in the morning and in the evening; his sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.
This is a great virtue. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two words which are light on the tongue and heavy in the Balance, and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhan-Allah wa bi hamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-'Azim (Glory and praise is to Allah, glory is to Allah the Almighty).
Sunan Ibn Majah 3806Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
He who utters ten times: 'La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahulmulku wa lahulhamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli sha'in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),' he will have a reward equal to that for freeing four slaves from the progeny of Prophet Isma'il.
Riyad as-Salihin 1411
in the two Sahihs.
And it is recommended that he say this ten times after Fajr and Maghrib, after Fajr and after Maghrib. After the previous dhikr, he says this phrase: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lah al-mulk, wa lah al-hamd, yuhyi wa yumitu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir" (There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things Able) ten times, after the tahlil of Fajr and the tahlil of Maghrib. Then he comes to "Subhan Allah, wa al-hamdu lillah" (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah) to the end, thirty-three times. He combines all this good.
And it is authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who utters a hundred times in a day these words: 'La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli sha'in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him; His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),' he will have a reward equivalent to that for emancipating ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be recorded to his credit, hundred of his sins will be blotted out from his scroll, and he will be safeguarded against the devil on that day till the evening; and no one will exceed him in doing more excellent good deeds except someone who has recited these words more often than him.
Riyad as-Salihin 1410
narrated by the two Shaykhs in the two Sahihs.
And this is a great hadith. It is befitting for the believer to pay attention to these dhikr and strive for them, being sincere to Allah and seeking His pleasure. May Allah guide them all.

The presenter : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
