The Ruling on a Woman Wearing a White Garment

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My sisters, Badour Hijazi and Samra al-Suhaybani, sent a message containing several questions, one of which asks: Is it permissible for a woman to wear a white garment?

Answer:
If it is in the style of men, it is not permissible; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the woman who imitates men. However, if its cut, stitching, and appearance are specific to women, there is nothing wrong with it, but leaving it is better; because it involves a type of imitation; because most men’s clothing is white, so it is safer for her to leave that. Otherwise, it is not forbidden if it is in a style specific to women, just as she wears black and green, even if men wear them, but if the black and green and yellow are in a style specific to women.
And likewise, a man wears black and red in the style specific to men, so white is like that; because clothing is shared between men and women, but it is obligatory that men’s clothing be specific to them, and that women’s clothing be specific to them, and it is not permissible for men to imitate women, nor for women to imitate men. Yes.
