The Ruling on What Is Called al-Hadrah, Which the Sufis Perform

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Another question, somewhat long, Your Eminence the Shaykh, in which it says: There is something widespread among us called al-Hadrah. Perhaps you do not know what al-Hadrah is, but I will explain to you what happens in this al-Hadrah; perhaps you will know it after that. Al-Hadrah is when a Shaykh comes with his followers, and with them are hand drums (duff), and people gather around them from every direction. It takes place on Thursday night, that is, the day that becomes Friday. Then they light a large fire, and then that Shaykh begins to beat the duff, he and his followers, and he says strange words. He seeks aid from Allah and from the righteous awliya (close friends of Allah) among us in Libya, such as Sayyid Abd al-Salam al-Asmar, Sayyid Murayyi, and others. Then some of the attendees begin to recite praise (madih) with the Shaykh, and many of the attendees, both women and men, faint. The Shaykh begins to beat those who faint severely, and he says to them: "Get out of the Muslim, you disbeliever!" He means by this that he is speaking to the jinn that has taken residence in the fainted human. As for the women, a woman grabs her by the hair of her head and begins to beat her face, and so this play begins and ends! The question: Are these actions forbidden for those who attend them? We ask you to provide us with information, knowing that the attendees, as they say, are in the thousands, and they build tents, and every family slaughters a sheep or a goat. So we ask you to present this question of ours and guide us and the Muslims who have these conditions among them. May Allah reward you with good?

Answer:
This act is a great abomination, and it is among the practices of some of the Sufis. It is not permissible to attend this act. Seeking aid from the awliya (close friends of Allah) and calling for aid from the awliya is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and worship of other than Allah . Beating the drums or the hand drums is among the reprehensible, newly invented methods of the Sufis.
So it is obligatory to be cautious of that, and it is obligatory to abandon this action, not to attend it, and to disapprove of it to those who attend it, because of the many evils in it. It is a bid'ah (religious innovation), and in it is also an evil, which is beating the duffs, and in it is a greater evil, which is shirk (associating partners with Allah) and seeking aid from the awliya. So all of this is a great evil.
So it is obligatory for the Muslims to abandon this action, be cautious of it, not attend it, and disapprove of it to those who do it; because it is a reprehensible bid'ah (religious innovation), and it contains a type of major shirk (associating partners with Allah), which is seeking aid from the awliya, supplicating to them, and calling for aid from them. This is from major shirk (associating partners with Allah). If he says: "O my master so-and-so! O Abd al-Salam! Or O my master al-Husayn! Or O my master the Messenger of Allah! Or O my master the Shaykh Abd al-Qadir! Help me, or help me, or cure my sick one, or return my absent one, or I am under your protection and you are sufficient for me," or the like of that, all of this is from major shirk (associating partners with Allah). And Allah says (Exalted and Majestic is He):
so do not invoke with Allah anyone.فَلا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا
[al-Jinn:18] And He says (Glorified is He):
And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"وَلا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكَ وَلا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Yunus:106] And He says (Glorified is He):
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
[al-Mu'minun:117].
So these people have taken other gods besides Allah, they lament to them and call for aid from them, so they have fallen into major shirk (associating partners with Allah), along with what they are in of innovations and misguided superstitions that have no basis.
So it is obligatory to be cautious of that with the utmost caution, and it is obligatory not to attend this evil, and to disapprove of it to those who do it, along with what is in it of major shirk (associating partners with Allah). We seek refuge in Allah from that. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
