Ruling on a woman cutting her hair for adornment

Question:
From Buraydah in the Qasim region, a letter was sent by one of the sisters from there, saying: (H. M. K) asks and says: Is cutting the hair, wearing the shabab, and braiding the hair into a single braid forbidden, or is it permissible?
Answer:
Cutting the hair to lighten it is permissible, but leaving it is better; because it is adornment and beauty. And if she has a husband, she should not cut it except with his consent and consultation. It is established that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cut their hair and lightened it after his death; because it is a burden and a hardship. So if she cuts from her head and lightens it because it is long; there is no harm. But she should not do it if she has a husband except with his consent. And if she makes it into braids; this is more beautiful and better; because it is part of a woman's beauty to have braids, and for her head to be long. This is part of beauty. But people in this recent era have come to prefer shortening the head and lightening it.
And the shabab has no harm in it, if she guards the 'awrah. The important thing is guarding the 'awrah and controlling the 'awrah. So if it is from the front, or from the back, there is no harm in that. But it is better that it be from the front; because it is easier to control. And if it is from the back, but she has controlled it and guarded her 'awrah, and she does not pull it down except when there is a need to remove the clothes; then there is no harm in that, and no blame—Allah willing. Yes.
