Question:
The listener, Umr al-Din al-Silani from Colombo, Sri Lanka, sent a message containing a number of questions. In one of his questions, he says: Science states that a human thinks with the brain, but there are some verses in the Noble Qur'an, as well as some hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that refer to the heart, for example: [Al-'Ankabut: 10]. Then the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 52 I hope for clarification. May Allah increase you in His knowledge?
Answer:
There is no contradiction between what the texts indicate regarding the heart being the locus of rectitude and corruption, and what doctors say regarding the brain. The brain is connected to the heart, and the heart is connected to the brain, as the scholars have stated. For this reason, He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said in His great Book: [Al-Hajj: 46]. Thus, He made the intellect connected to the heart. The intellect is located in the heart, but it has a connection to the brain. If the brain is damaged, the intellect becomes disordered. The heart is connected to the brain, and the brain is connected to the heart. If one becomes disordered, the other becomes disordered. Therefore, there is no contradiction between what doctors say about the brain and what the Qur'an and Sunnah indicate regarding the heart being the locus of rectitude and corruption.
So, when the heart is rectified, the entire body is rectified, as in the hadith. And when it is corrupted, the entire body is corrupted, because it is the locus of faith, the locus of fear of Allah, and the locus of revering the sanctities of Allah. However, it has a connection to the brain. If the brain becomes disordered, the heart becomes disordered. This is known among doctors and known through experience. When a man is struck on the head, his sensation is often disordered by the blow to his head.
So, the conclusion is: the head has a connection to the heart, and the heart has a connection to the brain. There is no contradiction between these two. Yes.

Is not Allah most knowing of what is within the breasts of all creatures?
أَوَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِمَا فِي صُدُورِ الْعَالَمِينَBeware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.
