The Ruling on Slaughter and Reciting the Qur'an for the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In his final questions, this questioner from Yemen asks: Is it permissible to slaughter animals and recite the Qur'an for the dead?

Answer:
This requires a detailed explanation: If the intention behind the slaughter is to offer a sacrifice on behalf of the deceased, the sacrifice is prescribed for both the living and the dead. It is permissible for him to sacrifice on their behalf, or to slaughter an animal and give it in charity, distributing it to the poor on their behalf.
However, slaughtering for the deceased, seeking nearness to them, is shirk (associating partners with Allah). ... Slaughtering for them, seeking nearness to them, is like how the worshippers of idols slaughter for their idols; this is major shirk. But if one slaughters seeking nearness to Allah, offering a sacrifice on behalf of the deceased, or giving charity to the poor on their behalf, or giving money or food in charity on their behalf, there is no harm in that. In fact, it is beneficial for the deceased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! My mother died and she did not leave a bequest. Will she receive reward if I give charity on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Yesنعم
. Thus, there is great good in this.
As for recitation at graves, it is a bid'ah (religious innovation). Recitation at graves is not prescribed, nor is prayer at graves. In fact, this is among the innovations, and it is among the means to shirk. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Observe some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them graves.اجعلوا من صلاتكم في بيوتكم ولا تتخذوها قبورًا
Sahih Muslim 777a
. This indicates that graves are not places for prayer or recitation.
Make some of your prayers in your homes, and do not take them as graves, for Satan flees from the house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited.اجعلوا من صلاتكم في بيوتكم ولا تتخذوها قبورًا، فإن الشيطان يفر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة
. This indicates that houses are the place for prayer and recitation. As for graves, they are not a place for prayer or recitation. In the house, one prays voluntary prayers, and a sick person prays there if he is unable to go to the mosque, and one recites in the house; all of this is good. As for graves, they are only visited to make du'a' (supplication) for the deceased, to seek mercy for them, and to do good to them through du'a'. As for making them a place for prayer, or for slaughter, or for recitation, this is a bid'ah. Yes.
