The Meaning of Despairing of Allah's Mercy

Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a question from one of the brothers (A. A. A.) who asks: What is the meaning of despairing of Allah's mercy, according to the Book and the Sunnah? May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
Despairing of Allah's mercy is hopelessness; it is when a person does not hope for Allah, despairing that Allah will forgive him and that Allah will have mercy on him. This is one of the major sins, among the major sins. Our Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) forbade this. He said (Exalted and Majestic is He): [Al-Zumar: 53], and He the Exalted said: [Yusuf: 87]. Therefore, it is not permissible for anyone to despair of Allah's mercy, meaning to lose hope because of his disbelief or his disobedience. Rather, he must repent, return to Allah, and turn to Him in repentance. He has the glad tidings that Allah will accept his repentance, magnify his reward, and reward him for the good he did.
As for despair and hopelessness due to bad deeds, this is the adornment of Shaytan, and it is not permissible. Rather, it is obligatory for the servant to be cautious of this, and not to despair or lose hope. Rather, he should hope for the mercy of his Lord, hope that Allah will accept his repentance, and hope that Allah will accept his deeds, so he does not lose hope. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
