The ruling on one who repents from a sin and then returns to it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: What is the ruling on one who commits a major or minor sin, then repents from it, then returns to his sin, then repents from it again? Does Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)accept his repentance from his sin, and what are the signs of repentance?

Answer:
Yes, if he repents, then returns, then repents again, praise be to Allah. The important thing is that he repents with a sincere repentance. If he repents from the sin, then returns to the sin, he must repent from the sin again. If the first repentance was sincere, there is no harm; Allah erases the sin with it. Whenever a person repents with a sincere and pure repentance, Allah erases the sin with it, even if he returns more than once. However, he must have the sincere resolve not to return. If he returns, then repents to Allah with a sincere repentance, Allah forgives him. For Allah says:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[Surat al-Nur: 31].
It is authentic that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reported from Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) that He said:
If My servant commits a sin, then repents to Me, I forgive himإذا أذنب عبدي ذنبًا، ثم تاب إلي؛ غفرت له
And so, if he returns, whoever returns and repents to Allah with a sincere repentance, Allah forgives him. Yes.
