The Ruling on Amulets and Ruqyah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner asks: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding amulets and ruqyah?

Answer:
Amulets are prohibited. They are what is hung on a person, whether from the Qur'an or from other sources. The correct view is to prohibit them. If they are from other than the Qur'an, there is no disagreement; they are prohibited like talismans, or strange things from strange writings, or bones, or other things. Hanging these is blameworthy.
As for if they are from the Qur'an, the scholars differed on them, and the correct view is that they are also prohibited for two reasons:
The first reason is the generality of the hadiths, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hangs an amulet, Allah will not complete for himمن تعلق تميمة؛ فلا أتم الله له
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:557
..
Whoever hangs an amulet, Allah will not complete for himمن تعلق ودعة؛ فلا ودع الله له
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 47:24
..
Whoever hangs an amulet, he has associated partners with Allahمن تعلق تميمة؛ فقد أشرك
This is general.
The second reason is that it is a means to hanging other amulets. If amulets from the Qur'an are hung, it becomes a means to hanging other amulets, because distinguishing between this and that is difficult. Therefore, the obligatory thing is to block the door and prohibit all amulets.
