Question:
After that, we conclude the message from the questioner in the Sultanate of Oman with this question. She mentions her mother and says: My mother wears amulets, even though she believes that what Allah wills will happen. But according to what she says, a person is required to seek his well-being and his own health. We have advised her that amulets are shirk (associating partners with Allah) and haram (forbidden), so she rebuked me and became angry. Please note that amulets are widespread among my relatives and the women of the village. What is your opinion on this, O Shaykh?
Answer:
Hanging amulets is not permissible by the text of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So my advice to you and your mother, and to all the people of the town, is to fear Allah and to beware of hanging amulets, whether from the Qur'an or from anything else. It is obligatory to cut the amulets and remove them; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): And because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani) So ruqyah means: the unknown, or ruqyah other than what is prescribed by the Shari'ah. As for the prescribed ruqyah, it is an exception and not included in the hadith.
And al-Tamimat is the plural of tamimah, and it is what is hung on children and others from talismans, from the Qur'an, or other than the Qur'an, or from a wada' (a knot or charm), or from knots, or from cryptograms. All of that is munkar (blameworthy) and not permissible.
And likewise al-Tawilah, which is called al-Sarf and al-'Atf, ... a type of sihr (sorcery). It is not permissible to do it, neither by women nor by men. So sorcery is among the forbidden things, indeed it is among shirk (associating partners with Allah); because of His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He) regarding the sorcerers: [al-Baqarah: 102] So He made it kufr (disbelief).
So it is obligatory to beware of all amulets, from the Qur'an and other than the Qur'an; because hanging them is a munkar (blameworthy) matter that the hadiths have generalized; and because hanging amulets from the Qur'an is a means to hanging others as well. So those who permitted hanging amulets from the Qur'an have erred in this, and the correct view is: prohibition for two reasons:
The first is: the generality of the hadiths indicating the prohibition of hanging amulets; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not make an exception saying: except if it is from the Qur'an, rather he generalized.
The second meaning is: that if hanging amulets from the Qur'an were permitted; it would be a means to hanging other amulets; because not everyone will search for this and that, and sadd al-dhara'i' (blocking the means to harm) is a necessary and obligatory matter. Yes.
