The Ruling on Boycotting and Severing Ties with Those Who Exaggerate in Bridal Gifts

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In his second question, this questioner says: We have a tribe—may Allah guide them—who are still adhering to some customs. They have established a method for the bridal gift and conditions. Some people rejected this, so we severed ties with them and decided to boycott them, not attend their celebrations or the occasions they hold. Among them are our relatives and neighbors. What is your opinion, Your Eminence?

Answer:
No, it is not permissible to sever ties with them or boycott them. However, they should be advised. If they decide on a certain amount for the bridal gift for their daughter, or a certain amount for her sister, they should be advised to reduce it.
As for severing ties with them, this is a doubtful matter for them; it is not called a sin. They should not be boycotted. Rather, they should be advised and directed toward good. One should cooperate with them in good and righteousness through kind words and a good manner, with the man, the woman, her mother, her father, her uncle, and the like, in the context of mutual advice and enjoining one another to truth. This is how it should be.
As for severing ties and boycotting, there is no basis for this; because it is a doubtful matter for them. They may have reasons; they may have stipulated things they need, and it is not possible—meaning—they cannot proceed with the marriage without them. But if there are excessive bridal gifts and excessive burdens, they should be advised in the context of advice... in the context of cooperation in righteousness and piety... in the context of enjoining one another to truth, not in the context of severing ties and harshness. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
