The ruling on a woman dyeing her hair black for adornment

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter reached the program from the United Arab Emirates, sent by one of the sisters from there, saying: Umm Mujahid, a Sudanese woman. Our sister has a collection of questions. In one of her questions, she says: I heard on the program on the fifteenth of Rabi' al-Akhir, 1409, a scholar issue a ruling that dyeing hair black for the adornment of a married woman is permissible, but there are hadiths that command us to avoid black, and they did not specify married women or others. What I know is that there are many hadiths prohibiting things a woman does with the intention of adornment, and they did not mention the married or the unmarried. So why does the married woman dye with black, and not do the other things of adornment? And is it true that the married woman is permitted the adornment that is forbidden to the other unmarried women, such as dyeing with black, for example? Please inform us, may Allah reward you, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The correct view is that dyeing with black is forbidden absolutely, for the married and the unmarried, and for men and women; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
Change this white hair and avoid black.غيروا هذا الشيب وجنبوه السواد
, which Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih. If it had been permissible for anyone to change [their hair] with black, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have made it permissible for the Companions and for the father of al-Idris (may Allah be pleased with them both). Rather, when the father of al-Idris was brought to him and he saw the whiteness of his beard and head, he said:
Change this white hair and avoid black.غيروا هذا الشيب وجنبوه السواد
. So I do not see a basis for the ruling of the one who issued a fatwa permitting black for the married woman, nor a place for it.
It is obligatory to avoid black for the woman and the man, the married and the unmarried; acting in accordance with the generality of the hadiths indicating that, among which is what Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i narrated with a sound chain from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
There will come in the last of time people who dye with black, like the pouches of pigeons, who will not smell the scent of Paradiseيأتي في آخر الزمان قوم يخضبون بالسواد، كحواصل الحمام، لا يريحون رائحة الجنة
. And in this chapter there are numerous hadiths, all of which prohibit dyeing with black; because of the deception, confusion, and trickery involved in it.
So what I advise all men and women is: to beware of changing gray hair to black. As for changing it with henna and katam, or with black mixed with something else; so that it is not black, but between black and red, or pure red, or yellow, all of this is prescribed. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them.إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون؛ فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
. So the Sunnah is that we differ from them in dyeing, but we do not dye with pure black.
And my advice to every Muslim and every Muslim woman is: to pay attention to listening to this program (Nur 'ala al-Darb) at its times; because of the great benefit in it. And a fatwa from some of the shaykhs may become confusing for him, and he finds its solution in the fatwa of the second scholar in this program, and the doubt is removed from him. So it is a program of great benefit, which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has facilitated through a group of people of knowledge.
So I advise all my brothers in every place, and all my sisters in every place, to listen, to listen to this program and benefit from it, for it is a great lesson of much benefit. May Allah facilitate it for you, O brother, and for you, O sister, in Allah, while you are in your home, and in your sitting place, and on your bed, and in your car, and so on. Every sister in Allah, may Allah facilitate this program for her, and she is in her home and on her bed, in the utmost comfort. It is necessary to praise Allah for that and thank Him for that, and to supplicate for those who established this program for success and assistance in all good, and that He may guide them to the truth in hitting the right path. Thus it is necessary for the believer with his brothers from whom he obtains benefit, to supplicate for them with success, correctness, and great reward.
We ask Allah to guide those in charge of this program to everything that is in the welfare and happiness of the Muslims, and we ask Him, Exalted is He, also to guide everyone to hitting the truth that agrees with what Allah and His Messenger said. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
