The Ruling on a Woman Traveling with Her Sister, Her Sister’s Husband, and Their Children

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener who identified herself by the initials (A. M. S) from Riyadh says: Is it permissible for me, O Shaykh, to travel with my sister’s husband, along with my sister and her children, when I have no mahram (relative one may not marry) with me other than him?

Answer:
It is not permissible for you to travel with your sister’s husband; because he is not a mahram (relative one may not marry) for you. The obligatory thing is to leave that, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
A woman should not travel except with a Dhu-Mahramلا تسافر المرأة إلا مع ذي محرم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1862
. Your sister’s husband or your aunt’s husband is not a mahram (relative one may not marry) for you. Your mahram (relative one may not marry) is your brother, or your father, or your son, or the like of that, or your daughter’s husband is a mahram (relative one may not marry) for you, or your mother’s husband is likewise a mahram (relative one may not marry). As for your sister’s husband, no. Yes.

The presenter: If she is within the city, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: There is no harm within the city; it is not travel. She goes with her sister ........, this is not travel. Moving around in the city, or going to the hospital or the court without seclusion, there is no harm.
