The Ruling on Handshaking After Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it correct to say: “May Allah accept (your prayer),” and to shake hands after completing the prayer? This is common among people.

Answer:
If he shakes hands with his brother after the prayer, after the dhikr, after he has finished the dhikr, and he had not shaken hands with him before that—neither in the row nor upon entering—then there is no harm in shaking hands with him. However, starting the handshake immediately when he says the taslim is not prescribed. When he says the taslim, he says: “I seek forgiveness from Allah” three times,
"O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity."
Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani)
,
There is no god but Allah. He is alone. There is no partner with Him. Sovereignty belongs to Him and He is Potent over everything. There is no might or power except with Allah. There is no god but Allah and we do not worship but Him alone. To Him belong all bounties, to Him belongs all Grace, and to Him is worthy praise accorded. There is no god but Allah, to Whom we are sincere in devotion, even though the unbelievers should disapprove it.
Sahih Muslim 594a
,
O Allah! No-one can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the fortune of a man of means is useless before Youاللهم لا مانع لما أعطيت ولا معطي لما منعت ولا ينفع ذا الجد منك الجد
Sahih al-Bukhari 6615
.
This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do when he said the taslim from the prayer. He would say:
O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani)
, then he would turn to the people and give them his noble face (peace and blessings be upon him), and then he would proceed to the dhikr mentioned earlier:
There is no god but Allah. He is alone. There is no partner with Him. Sovereignty belongs to Him and He is Potent over everything. There is no might or power except with Allah. There is no god but Allah and we do not worship but Him alone. To Him belong all bounties, to Him belongs all Grace, and to Him is worthy praise accorded. There is no god but Allah, to Whom we are sincere in devotion, even though the unbelievers should disapprove it.
Sahih Muslim 594a
.
And if he shakes hands with his brother on his right or left, provided he had not shaken hands with him before, this is good because of the affection and bonding it brings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith:
Should I not direct you to a thing which, if you do, will foster love amongst you: (i. e.) give currency to (the practice of paying salutation to one another by saying) as-salamu alaikum.
Sahih Muslim 54a
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to shake hands with his Companions and say (peace and blessings be upon him):
When one of you meets his brother, let him greet him. If a wall, a stone, or a tree comes between them and then he meets him again, let him greet him.
. And the Companions used to shake hands when they met .
Handshaking and greeting are a confirmed sunnah, and in them is great good, bonding, affection, and closeness among Muslims. If he had already greeted him in the row before the prayer, that is sufficient, if Allah wills. And if he shakes hands with him after that, it does no harm, if Allah wills. But he should be content with the first handshake, and praise be to Allah, if he had shaken hands with him when he met him in the row, or when he finished the greeting of the mosque or the rawatib prayer. All of this is sufficient, and praise be to Allah. Even if, hypothetically, he shakes hands with him again after finishing the dhikr of the obligatory prayer, we do not know of any harm in that; because that increases good, affection, and love among Muslims, and the matter is broad in this regard, and praise be to Allah.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
