Does the deceased know who washes him, shrouds him, and buries him?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, Adel Ahmad from Makkah al-Mukarramah, asks in this question: Does the deceased, once he has died, know who washes him, shrouds him, and places him in the grave?

Answer:
I am not aware of any evidence for that. The deceased has been cut off from all knowledge. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said regarding them:
but you cannot make hear those in the graves.وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ
[Fatiha: 22],
If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplicationإِنْ تَدْعُوهُمْ لا يَسْمَعُوا دُعَاءَكُمْ
[Fatiha: 14]. The deceased’s deeds are cut off, and he does not hear the supplications of people. However, supplication benefits him when people pray for him and send mercy upon him. For this reason, it is prescribed to say after burial: “O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him firmness when questioned. O Allah, forgive him and grant him firmness with the firm word.” Supplication benefits him.

The presenter: The questioner asks in this question: Is it valid if two men enter the mosque and the imam has finished the final bowing, as we indicated, for one of them to tell the other to say...

The Shaykh: This relates to the first question regarding making the people of the graves hear. An exception to this is the people of Badr. When they died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them when they were thrown into the well of Badr:
Do you know that what I have come to you with is the truth?هل تعلمون أنما جئتكم به حق؟!
Then Umar said to him: “You are speaking to people who have become corpses!” He said:
You do not hear what I am saying any better than they do, but they cannot answer.ما أنتم بأسمع لما أقوله منهم، ولكن لا يستطيعون أن يجيبو
Musnad Ahmad 182Sahih (Darussalam)
This is an exception. It indicates that the people of Badr heard the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that Allah made them hear His rebuke and reprimand of them. This is a specific case. As for the rest of the dead, there is no evidence that they hear, but they benefit from supplication and from charity given on their behalf. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
