Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of our brother listeners. He says: I reside in the Kingdom (S. A. A). Judging by his handwriting, he appears to be Sudanese. He asks for the exegesis of the saying of the Truthful One (Blessed and Exalted is He): [Al-Mujadilah: 3]. May Allah the Great be truthful.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
This noble verse clarifies the ruling on zihar. The meaning of zihar is for a man to say to his wife: "You are to me like the back of my mother," or "like the back of my sister," or "like the back of my maternal aunt," or something similar. This is called zihar. Allah the Exalted has made expiation obligatory in it if he intends to return to his wife. If he intends to return, he must perform the expiation before he returns to her: [Al-Mujadilah: 3]. The expiation is freeing a believing slave, male or female. If he is unable to do so, he must fast for two consecutive months, sixty days, before touching her. If he is unable to do that, he must feed sixty poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) from the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Its measure is approximately one and a half kilograms of the staple food of the country, such as dates, rice, wheat, or barley, or the staple food of the country, before he touches her. Yes.

And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
