The Ruling on Boycotting a Son Who Is Undutiful to His Parents and Neglects Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man has been undutiful to his parents many times, to the extent that he does not visit them. In fact, he speaks about them in a way that a son should not speak about his father. Our question is also that he does not care much about prayer, and he may drive us away when we visit him. Therefore, we do not like to visit him, and we do not go to him. Do we commit a sin in doing so?

Answer:
You must advise him so that he repents to Allah from his undutifulness to his parents. The right of parents is great. It is obligatory for him to be dutiful to them and to treat them well, even if they hit him or insult him. Their right is great, even if they are disbelievers. (And treat them with kindness) as Allah the Exalted said regarding disbelievers:
but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindnessوَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
[Luqman: 15]. He has no right to insult them or be undutiful to them. However, he has no right to obey them in disobedience. There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.”إنما الطاعة في المعروف، لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
Mishkat al-Masabih 3696
.
If he does not pray, then the one who does not pray is a disbeliever. Do not visit him; rather, boycott him until he repents to Allah. He deserves to be boycotted for his undutifulness. And if he neglects prayer, neglecting prayer is greater and more serious. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة، فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
So he deserves to be boycotted, and his case should be referred to the one in authority so that he is punished until he is asked to repent and until he becomes regular in prayer. If he does not become regular and it is established before the judge that he does not care about prayer and that he neglects it, the judge looks into his case regarding what he deserves, such as execution or other matters.
The point is: It is obligatory for the relatives of this man who does not pray to boycott him if he does not accept advice and does not repent to Allah. And if they refer his case to the one in authority so that what is obligatory is carried out against him, that is also appropriate if it is established against him by the legal evidence. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
