The Hadith of the Fly and an Explanation of Its Meaning

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner, Samih from Jordan, says in this question—Your Eminence, the Shaykh: Some people say: If a fly falls into food or drink, you should dip it in the food or drink so that its wing enters the food; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the wing of the fly is a disease, and in it is a cure." What is the authenticity of this hadith, Your Eminence, the Shaykh?

Answer:
Yes, it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When a fly falls in the drink of one of you, he should fully dip it and then throw it away because there is disease in one of its wings and cure in the otherإذا وقع الذباب في شراب أحدكم فليغمسه، ثم لينزعه ويلقه؛ فإن في أحد جناحيه داءً وفي الآخر شفاء
Bulugh al-Maram 14
And in another narration:
And it protects itself with the wing that has the disease.وإنه يتقي بالجناح الذي فيه الداء
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:1100
This was narrated by al-Bukhari in the Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a fly falls in the drink of one of you, he should fully dip it and then throw it away because there is disease in one of its wings and cure in the otherإذا وقع الذباب في شراب أحدكم فليغمسه ثم ينزعه، فإن في أحد جناحيه داءً وفي الآخر شفاءً
Bulugh al-Maram 14
.
So the Sunnah is that if it falls into a drink, whether milk, water, or any other drink, it should be dipped and then removed and thrown away, and it does no harm; because the disease in one wing is cured by the medicine in the other wing, and the harm is removed. When it is dipped, the medicine in it counteracts the disease in it until its harm is removed. Yes.

The presenter: Is there anyone who denies this hadith, Your Eminence, the Shaykh?

The Shaykh: No, that is wrong. What they deny is wrong. They have no insight, they have no knowledge. The hadith is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there is no harm in that, and praise be to Allah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you.
