The Shaykh : We read today’s lesson the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): “He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 3320”. The fly is well known and is among the weakest of animals, and for this reason Allah made it an example in the challenge, saying: Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Hajj 22:73] Listen, listen to this example from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is calling you to listen, and He is above the seven heavens, saying: [Al-Hajj 22:73] What do we say? We listen and obey; we listen. [Al-Hajj 22:73] The fly is among the weakest of animals; they cannot create a fly even if they all gathered to do so. For this reason, you find that the fly has no house and no fixed place; wherever it is, it settles there. It is among the weakest of animals. [Al-Hajj 22:73] Even if they all gathered, they would not be able to create a fly. Look at this divine challenge alongside the legislative challenge. [Al-Isra 17:88] Allah challenged creation to bring forth the like of His legislative verses or the like of His cosmic verses. The like of His legislative verses is in His saying: [Al-Isra 17:88] And the cosmic ones are: [Al-Hajj 22:73] These are the known, numerous, multiplying flies in some times or in some places. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What kind of drink? It is general because it is a singular noun with a possessive, which indicates generality. What kind of drink: water, milk, broth, whatever it is. When he said: we know that it must be a liquid drink, because a non-liquid cannot be submerged in. So, a liquid drink. For example, honey is a drink; can one submerge [a fly] in it? No, it is not possible to submerge it in.
The student: ...
The Shaykh : But is it possible?
The student: Yes.
The Shaykh : It is not possible, except if you mix it with water or milk, then it is possible. In any case, the hadith indicates that the intended meaning is that in which the fly can be submerged. “Remove it” means: take it out of the drink so that it does not fall into... and you know that it is small and can enter with the drink without the person drinking it, but let him remove it. Sunan Ibn Majah 3505Sahih (Darussalam) Subhan Allah! The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was not a graduate of a medical college, but revelation came to him. Otherwise, who would have known at that time that in one of its wings is a disease and in the other is a cure? There were no analyses and no modern medicine, but it was revelation from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). “Disease” means illness, and in the other is a cure. Is it a cure from this specific disease, or is it general? It is possible that the intended meaning is a cure from that disease in the other wing. It is also possible that the intended meaning is a cure in general. And if we say it is general, does it include every disease? It is said regarding this what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about the truffle: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2067Sahih (Darussalam) So it is not a cure for every disease that affects the eye, but it is a cure for a type of diseases.
Al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud narrated it, and Abu Dawud added: Sunan Abi Dawud 3844Sahih (Al-Albani) Here we say: Al-Bukhari narrated it. The apparent statement of the author is that no one other than Al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud narrated it. So if someone asks: Where are the other Imams? Why did they not narrate it? It is said: Do all the Imams, when they narrate from people, agree in narrating from them? No, perhaps they do not see them or do not live to meet them. Just as many hadiths come to us that do not mention Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and although we do not know, it is most likely that Abu Bakr and 'Umar heard it but did not narrate it. So it is not necessary that because the other Imams did not narrate it, it is one of Al-Bukhari’s weak individual narrations. It is not weak; rather, it is authentic, and modern medicine testifies to it. We will ask our brother Irshad now if he has knowledge about this. He says: Al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud narrated it, and Abu Dawud added: Sunan Abi Dawud 3844Sahih (Al-Albani) “It protects itself” means that when it fears for itself and is about to fall into this drink, what does it put forward? It puts forward the wing that has the disease. This is either inspiration from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) or that this wing has a characteristic not in the other wing that the fly knows. In any case, we have no concern with this. We say: We believe and we affirm that it protects itself with the wing that has the disease. And Allah knows best why it protects itself with it. Brother Irshad, do you have knowledge about this?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : No, we have not reached this yet. I say this disease. In any case, I read in several newspapers and magazines that they proved it contains fever—I do not know what it is—and that this, by the permission of Allah, if you submerge it, then in the other wing is something that counteracts it. And in reality—pay attention, people—we only cite the statements of doctors or astronomers regarding what the Book and the Sunnah indicate, not because we do not accept anything unless they testify. We accept it even if they do not testify, and even if they testify to the contrary. And if it is established in authenticity and indication, we do not care about them. But we benefit from it in two ways: First, increased reassurance, without doubt. Second, refuting those who cast doubt on the Shari'ah regarding things that do not enter their limited minds. We say: Astronomers have testified to this, or doctors have testified to this. So we benefit. We do not say that we throw away everything people say regarding medicine, astronomy, and celestial bodies, but we do not accept everything they say. If what they say contradicts the established Book and Sunnah in indication and narration, we do not accept their words. We take what came in the Book and Sunnah and say: Your words now that contradict the Book and Sunnah—your words now that contradict the Book and Sunnah—will come a time when people will testify to the truth of what came in the Book and Sunnah. First: We ask why the author brought this in the chapter of water? The answer: He brought it to indicate that something like a fly, if it dies in a small amount of water, does not make it impure. Because you know that the vessel in the drink of any of you, when a person wants to drink, where does he drink from? From a large vessel or a small one?
The student: Small.
The Shaykh : Small. If a fly is submerged in it while it is hot, it will die. So the author brought it to indicate that if something like a fly falls into a small amount of water and dies, then the water is not made impure by it. This is the appropriate ruling.
If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it
