The Shaykh’s commentary on the word “my Sunnah” in the hadith: “I have left among you two matters; you will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. They will not separate until they return to me at the Pool.”

The Shaykh : I said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in the first hadith: and in that hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 3213Sahih (Al-Albani) together, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3788Sahih (Darussalam). As a commentary on the word, or on the word: the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we should mention that following the righteous predecessors is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Following the righteous predecessors is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because they were the closest in time to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), especially his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), who received the Shari'ah from him, from his pure mouth, fresh and green, before anything began to seep into it or enter it that was not part of it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned his Ummah against taking what might be innovated for them from newly invented matters. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to them one day, a wonderful sermon that became a constitution for every caller to Islam with the call of truth. This is what came in the hadith of al-'Arba' ibn Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a sermon that stirred our hearts and caused our eyes to weep”. So we said, “O Messenger of Allah, give us advice.” He said: And in another hadith: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam). The point of this authentic hadith is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged his Companions to hold fast to his Sunnah first, then he added to that by ordering us to hold fast to the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs second. For he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: . And he did not stop with this command and this encouragement, but he added to it and said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2676Sahih (Darussalam). In this hadith, there is a verbal and a conceptual expansion of the Sunnah that was mentioned previously in the earlier hadith, Mishkat al-Masabih 186Hasan (Zubair `Aliza'i).
