The Shaykh : Therefore, it is obligatory that this be firmly established in our minds and that we believe in our creed that no one has the right to understand the Qur'an independently without resorting to the hadith of the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him). Consequently, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: , and in another narration: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3788Sahih (Darussalam), are not a single matter, and the two revelations are not a single revelation, . The implication of this hadith is that any group that clings to only one of the two is misguided and has strayed from both the Book and the Sunnah. The one who clings to the Qur'an alone, without the Sunnah, is in the same state as the one who clings to the Sunnah alone, without the Qur'an; both are in clear error. Guidance and light lie in clinging to the two lights: the Book of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). In this authentic hadith, he (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) gave us glad tidings that we will never go astray as long as we cling to the Book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
I have left with you two matters, or two things, by which you will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.
