Question:
This questioner, Abdullah Abdulaziz from Jordan, says: Your Eminence, peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings. My father and mother have been dead for a long time, and every day I read whatever is easy for me from the Noble Qur'an, and at the end I recite al-Fatihah, and I say: O Allah, send the reward of what I have read to the souls of my father and mother. Is that permissible for me?
Answer:
This is not prescribed, and there is no report in the Sunnah regarding dedicating the reward of recitation; it is not prescribed. However, give charity on their behalf, and make du'a' for them, perform Hajj on their behalf, or perform 'Umrah on their behalf. As for dedicating the reward of recitation, or the reward of fasting, or the reward of prayer; this has no basis in the Shari'ah. So it is obligatory to leave that off. But it is prescribed for you, my brother, to strive in making du'a' for them, seeking mercy for them, seeking forgiveness for them, giving charity on their behalf, and performing Hajj or 'Umrah on their behalf. All of this is good.
We ask Allah for success for you.
The presenter: Does the reward of deeds reach the deceased, Your Eminence?
The Shaykh: The deeds of the living for which there is an explicit text, such as charity, benefit the deceased. Du'a' and seeking forgiveness also benefit him. Performing Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf also benefit him. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
