The Permissibility of Repeating the Opening Supplication in the Tarawih Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the listeners, Mu'ayyaf Maysilih sent a message containing a collection of questions. In one of them, he says: If the imam begins the tarawih prayer and recites the opening supplication after the takbir of ihram, then proceeds to recite al-Fatihah, then the rest of the Qur'an, then performs the second rak'ah, and then says the taslim, and then begins the second takbir of ihram, does he also recite the opening supplication? Or is it sufficient for him to do so only the first time? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is sufficient for him to do so the first time. The opening supplication is only in the first rak'ah, in the obligatory and voluntary prayers. After the takbir of ihram, he opens with the supplication, and it is not prescribed to repeat it in the second or third rak'ah. However, if he begins the second unit of prayer in Tarawih or a voluntary prayer, he also opens with the supplication. Every time he prays two rak'ahs, stands up, and says the takbir, he opens with the supplication. This is the Sunnah, in voluntary and obligatory prayers, such as the Tarawih prayer in Ramadan, and such as the Duha prayer. If he prays two units or more, he opens with the supplication in every unit. This is the best, after the first takbir, meaning after the takbir of ihram, he says:
Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You.سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك، وتبارك اسمك، وتعالى جدك، ولا إله غيرك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 243Hasan (Darussalam)
or he may use any other authentic type of opening supplication. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
