The Obligation to Adhere to What Came in the Sunnah

Question:
The questioner (N. S. al-Qahtani) says in his question: Some people say that the obligatory is found only in the Qur'an, and that what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said is only Sunnah, not binding. What do we say to them, O Shaykh?
Answer:
The obligatory and the Sunnah are taken from the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and from the words of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He); for Allah says: [Al-Hashr: 7] and He says (Exalted and Majestic is He): [Al-Nisa: 80], and He says: [Al-Nisa: 59].
So whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory—even if it did not come in the Qur'an—it is obligatory to adhere to it. For example, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1408a This is not in the Qur'an: Sahih Muslim 1408a The Muslims have agreed upon this, which is in the Qur'an: [Al-Nisa: 23]. Then the Sunnah came with the prohibition of marrying a woman and her aunt, or a woman and her maternal aunt, and the Muslims agreed upon that.
And likewise, whenever something comes in the authentic Sunnah, it is obligatory to adhere to it, even if it is not mentioned in the Noble Qur'an. This is the case with the prohibition of every predator with fangs and every bird of prey with talons; this did not come in the Qur'an, but the Sunnah brought it: the prohibition of predators like the lion and the leopard, and the like, every predator with fangs, and the dog, and the like, and the prohibition of every bird of prey with talons, like the eagle, the buzzard, and the falcon. These came in the Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُواHe who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَobey Allah and obey the Messenger
أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَSo whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory—even if it did not come in the Qur'an—it is obligatory to adhere to it. For example, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
One should not combine a woman and her father's sister
لا يجمع بين المرأة وعمتهاOne should not combine a woman and her father's sister, nor a woman and her mother's sister in marriage.
لا يجمع بين المرأة وعمتها، ولا بين المرأة وخالتهاand that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously
وَأَنْ تَجْمَعُوا بَيْنَ الأُخْتَيْنِAnd likewise, whenever something comes in the authentic Sunnah, it is obligatory to adhere to it, even if it is not mentioned in the Noble Qur'an.
