The ruling on sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with words that undermine the oneness of Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from the UAE—in the last of her questions in her letter to Nur 'ala al-Darb—says:
I ask for clarification on the validity of this formula for sending blessings upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), which is as follows:
(O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad. My means have run out; come to my aid, O Messenger of Allah. O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, the beloved and the one who is loved, the healer of ailments and the remover of distress, and upon his family and his companions, and peace. O Allah, send the complete blessing upon Muhammad and the perfect peace upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him))?

Answer:
This is reprehensible. This is a reprehensible form of sending blessings, and it is not permissible. Because saying, “Come to my aid, O Muhammad,” is supplication to other than Allah. This is shirk (associating partners with Allah), shirk with Allah, and it is not permissible.

The Shaykh: And what is the statement that follows?

The presenter: She says: (O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad. My means have run out; come to my aid, O Messenger of Allah).

The Shaykh: This is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), yes. I seek refuge in Allah, yes.

The presenter: (…O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad, the Prophet, the beloved and the one who is loved, the healer of ailments).

The Shaykh: Likewise, this is not so. He is not the healer of ailments. The One who heals ailments is Allah alone. He is the One who grants health and heals (Exalted and Majestic is He), yes.

The presenter: (And the remover of distress).

The Shaykh: Likewise, this is major shirk. It is not the one who relieves distress; the one who relieves it is Allah alone , but following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and obeying him, and following his Shari'ah, are among the causes of relieving distress and among the causes of making matters easy.
As for the Healer of ailments, the Remover of distress, and the One who reaches people with His mercy, that is Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). But the Sunnah in this matter is to say:
Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370
This is the form of sending blessings that he taught his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) when they said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has commanded us to send blessings upon you, but how do we do so?” He said, “Say:
Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370
.
And he said to them on another occasion as well:
O Allah! bless Muhammad, his wives and his offspring as Thou didst bless Ibrahim, and grant favours to Muhammad, and his wives and his offspring as Thou didst grant favours to the family of Ibrahim; Thou art Praiseworthy and Glorious.
Sahih Muslim 407
And in another wording he said, “Say:
Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)" And the salam is as you know.اللهم صل على محمد وعلى آل محمد كما صليت على آل إبراهيم، وبارك على محمد وعلى آل محمد كما باركت على آل إبراهيم في العالمين إنك حميد مجيد، والسلام كما علمتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1285Sahih (Darussalam)
The greeting of peace is: (Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings).
This is the prescribed form of sending blessings. As for this form mentioned by the questioner, it is reprehensible and involves shirk (associating partners with Allah). We seek refuge in Allah, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, Your Eminence.
These phrases contain these instances of shirk. I ask: How does a Muslim achieve tawhid (the oneness of Allah), O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: Achieving tawhid (the oneness of Allah) is by making worship sincere for Allah alone, and not supplicating to anyone but Allah, not seeking aid from anyone but Allah, not relying on anyone but Him, not making vows for anyone but Him, not slaughtering for anyone but Him, and not praying to anyone but Him. Worship is for Allah alone, as He the Exalted said:
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
[Surah al-Jinn: 18]. He the Exalted said:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
[Surah al-Bayyinah: 5]. This is the reality of tawhid (the oneness of Allah): to single out Allah with worship, and to single out His Prophet with following and obedience (peace and blessings be upon him). As for worship, it is the right of Allah, and He must be singled out with it (Exalted and Majestic is He):
So invoke Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
[Surah Ghafir: 14],
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Surah al-Fatihah: 5],
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
[Surah al-Bayyinah: 5]. So one does not pray to anyone but Allah, does not slaughter for anyone but Allah, does not make vows for anyone but Allah, does not fast for anyone but Allah, and so on with all acts of worship, yes.

The presenter: Your Eminence, what is your guidance for the owners of bookstores, where some of these instances of shirk may be found in some of the books available?

The Shaykh: It is obligatory for the people of bookstores to select beneficial books and to be cautious. It is obligatory for those in charge of bookstores to fear Allah and not to sell books that call to shirk (associating partners with Allah) or bid'ah (religious innovation). It is obligatory for Muslims to cooperate in righteousness and piety. Indeed, every believer must fear Allah and be mindful of Allah. If he sees something that contradicts the Shari'ah, he should report it to those in authority so that that thing may be removed.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
