Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner who sent this message is a resident of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the city of Hail, and is Sudanese. He says: Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.
[Al-Ahzab: 56]. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet and our beloved Muhammad. The questioner asks: How is the sending of blessings upon the Prophet performed?

Answer:
Just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Companions: They said, “O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to send blessings upon you; how do we send blessings upon you?” He said:
He told us to say, “O God, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. O God, grant favours to Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham and Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 919
.
These formulations have many words in their wording: In one wording:
O Allah: bless Muhammad and his family as Thou didst bless the family of Ibrahim. Verily Thou art Praiseworthy and Glorious, O Allah.
Sahih Muslim 406a
and in some:
O Allah! bless Muhammad, his wives and his offspring as Thou didst bless Ibrahim, and grant favours to Muhammad, and his wives and his offspring as Thou didst grant favours to the family of Ibrahim; Thou art Praiseworthy and Glorious.
Sahih Muslim 407
...
A fourth type:
0 Allah, bless Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst bless the mernbers of Ibrahim's household. Grant favours to Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst grant favours to the members of the household of Ibrahim in the world.
Sahih Muslim 405
and peace, just as ... peace, one should say:
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1171Sahih (Darussalam)
.
This is the Sunnah: before making supplication, one sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with any of these transmitted forms of sending blessings, in whatever form it was transmitted. Then, if one wishes to make supplication, one precedes this with praise of Allah, praising His Lord, saying: “O Allah, to You belongs all praise, to You belongs all praise in every circumstance, to You belongs all praise for all Your blessings.” Then one sends blessings upon the Prophet with one of these forms, and then makes supplication.
