Question:
The first message in this episode was sent to the program from the Noble Makkah by one of the female listeners there. She indicated her name with the letters (A. M. B). She has a collection of questions, one of which says: Is the prostration for forgetfulness one prostration, or two?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The prostration for forgetfulness consists of two prostrations. This is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did it. They are obligatory for one who forgets an obligatory act, or does what is not permissible in prayer due to forgetfulness. Their place is before the closing salam and after it. If he prostrates them before the salam, there is no harm. If he prostrates them after the salam, there is no harm. They are better before the salam, except in two cases:
The first is if he says the salam while missing a rak'ah or more due to forgetfulness; then he completes the prayer, and then prostrates for forgetfulness after the salam.
The second case is if he builds his prayer on his predominant assumption, seeks the truth, exerts effort, completes the prayer, and then says the salam; then he prostrates for forgetfulness after that. In these two cases, his prostration is after the salam, and this is what is better. If he prostrates before the salam, there is no blame on him. And praise be to Allah. Yes.
