Ruling on Designating Specific Clothes for a Woman in the Waiting Period of Widowhood

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener is Muhammad Muhsin Ahmad from Yemen. He sent a message containing two questions. In his first question, he says: We have a custom where, when a man dies, they order the wife to wear white clothes for a period of four months and ten days, and not to wear any clothes other than white ones. Does this custom have a basis? And is it permissible to adhere to it? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
This custom is invalid, and it is not permissible to adhere to it. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
nor wear dyed clothes, except a garment of 'Asbلا تلبس ثوبًا مصبوغًا إلا ثوب عصب
Sahih al-Bukhari 5342
Otherwise, a garment that has no beauty. She wears black, green, red, and white that does not resemble men’s clothing, provided it has no adornment and does not resemble men.
As for designating white, or black; there is no evidence for this. Rather, it is a religious innovation in the designation. However, it is permissible for her to wear any garment that is not beautiful, whose dye is not beautiful, such as green, black, red, white, and others. As for beautiful garments, it is not permissible for her to wear them; because fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) may occur through them. Just as she does not dye her hair with henna, does not wear jewelry, and does not touch perfume during the period of ihdad (mourning), which is four months and ten days if she is not pregnant.
As for if she is pregnant; then her period is the delivery of the child; due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And she must not wear a dyed garment except one of the types made of dyed yarn, or apply collyrium, or touch perfumeلا تلبس ثوبًا مصبوغًا إلا ثوب عصب، ولا تكتحل، ولا تمس طيبًا
Sahih Muslim 938c
-upon him be peace and blessings- and he prohibited wearing jewelry as well. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
