Question:
A message from the Holy City of Madinah, signed by one of the sisters from there, says: The sender is Umm Usamah from the Holy City of Madinah. She asks and says: Is it permissible for a wife in her waiting period due to her husband’s death to leave her house during the waiting period to go to her sons, or daughters, if they invite her, provided she returns to her house on the same day and does not stay overnight with them?
Answer:
The widow in her waiting period due to death is the one who is obligated to remain in the house where her husband died and where she was residing. She does not go out to people for visits, not to her children, nor to anyone else; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the woman in waiting:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1204Sahih (Darussalam) This is the command for the woman in waiting—(peace and blessings be upon him)—he said to her: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1204Sahih (Darussalam).
However, her going out for a need, such as a hospital or a doctor, such as a lawsuit against her in court, or a need in the market to buy her necessities, is permissible. But visiting people, visiting her children, or anyone else, this is not appropriate; she remains in the house.
But if there is an important need, such as a school, or a student who would miss out on knowledge; then she may go out for these important needs. Being a student, or a teacher, or an employee, these are important needs. She may go out, but without adornment, in ordinary clothes that have no beauty, not perfumed, not wearing kohl, and not wearing jewelry. She must observe the other matters; because the woman in waiting is obligated to remain in the house except for a need, and she is obligated to refrain from perfume, from wearing jewelry, from beautiful clothes, and from kohl and henna.
And if she goes out for a need, she observes these matters: she does not wear jewelry, she does not wear beautiful clothes, she does not apply kohl, she does not perfume herself, and she does not do henna to beautify her hands, or her feet, or her head, or anything else, until her waiting period due to death ends.
So if she goes out in this state for a need; there is no harm. And she is not to wear beautiful clothes; she wears ordinary clothes in her house, and when she goes out. When the period is completed—praise be to Allah—she wears what she is accustomed to, and praise be to Allah. Yes.
