The Ruling on Sitting with the Companions of Major Sins

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
After this, a message reached the program from one of the listening brothers from the Libyan Jamahiriyyah, Muhammad Ali al-Bashir. He says: Is it permissible for a person to sit with the people of sins, especially those who drink intoxicants and perhaps play games of chance? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to sit with those who openly commit sins; rather, he must be cautious of them and keep his distance from them, lest he be afflicted with what afflicted them, and lest he do what they do. This is except if he is present to forbid evil and call to good, by standing before them, calling them, and advising them in a good manner. If they respond, fine; otherwise, he departs, and there is no harm. As for sitting with them, no. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.
[Al-An'am: 68].
So Allah forbade sitting with the people of oppression after the reminder
then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.فَلا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ الذِّكْرَى مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Al-An'am: 68]; because one may incline toward them, or do what they do. The obligatory thing is caution. But if he stands before them to call to Allah, guide to good, and forbid evil in a good manner, and advise them, perhaps Allah will guide them through His means, and perhaps they will respond. This is a required matter. And if he is able to do so and thinks it will benefit them, it is obligatory for him; due to His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) :
So remind, if the reminder should benefit;فَذَكِّرْ إِنْ نَفَعَتِ الذِّكْرَى
[Al-A'la: 9]
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
[Al-Ghashiyah: 21].
So the point is: Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has prescribed for us reminding and calling. If you are able to call them to Allah, guide them to good, and warn them from falsehood, then you are upon great good. As for sitting with them, no. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
