Ruling on the latecomer beginning with the opening supplication

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What if the worshipper does not catch the imam at the opening takbir, but finds the imam reciting in the second surah after al-Fatihah, for example? Does he begin with the opening supplication, or with al-Fatihah? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
He says the takbir and recites al-Fatihah if he fears the imam will bow. However, if he knows from the imam’s condition and recitation that he is slow enough for him to make the opening supplication and recite al-Fatihah, there is no harm. But the closer view—may Allah know best—is that he does not make the opening supplication, especially in the prayers where the recitation is loud; because he is commanded to listen attentively. But al-Fatihah is an exception; he recites al-Fatihah and does not make the opening supplication.
As for the prayers where the recitation is quiet, if he thinks he can make the opening supplication and recite, he makes the opening supplication, then recites al-Fatihah. He makes the short opening supplication:
Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You.سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك، وتبارك اسمك، وتعالى جدك، ولا إله غيرك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 243Hasan (Darussalam)
and he recites al-Fatihah. This is in the quiet prayers. As for the loud prayers, no; because he is commanded to listen attentively, so he does not recite anything except al-Fatihah. He recites al-Fatihah and that is sufficient. Yes.
