The Shaykh’s explanation that every newly invented innovation abolishes a Prophetic sunnah that was previously practiced, with examples provided.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : This is a saying, as they used to say in the past, that is written in gold ink: "No innovation is introduced except that a sunnah is thereby extinguished."

The questioner : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. We see, for example, models that support this report. For instance, we speak of the praying, worshipping people. One of them enters the mosque and finds his companion performing wudu. Instead of greeting him with "As-salamu alaykum," he initiates with "Zamzam." This is an innovation that has overturned a sunnah, indeed an obligation:
The right of a Muslim over a Muslim is five: if you meet him, greet him
When did you come?

The questioner : Now, my Shaykh, I have greeted you.

The Shaykh : Glory be to Allah! I did not notice you.

The questioner : After the Shaykh, Ali.

The Shaykh : Why did you not shake hands?

The questioner : So as not to interrupt the lesson. May Allah reward you with good, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Thank you. The point is that he should greet him with an innovated greeting, saying "Zamzam" instead of "As-salamu alaykum." Likewise, when they finish the prayer, they meet their companion for the first time, and it may be that they have not seen him for hours, or days, or more than that. Instead of initiating the greeting, he says to him: "May Allah accept [your prayer]." This is a shock to the sunnahs. And regarding the sunnahs here, let us keep in mind that the intended meaning of "sunnah" here is not the customary sunnah that corresponds to the fard. Is it a fard or a sunnah? No:
Whoever abandons my sunnah is not from me
— may Allah have mercy on you — this hadith includes the prohibition of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and his biography, which encompasses all the rulings of the Shari'ah, with its five rulings. This is as an example from many examples among the praying people. But if we move to the playfully inclined, we find that many of them sit in the cafes, and they are at least drinking coffee or tea. As for the majority, they may play dam, shidde, b-b, and so on, or chess. They hear the adhan:
Satan made their deeds pleasing to them
[Al-Anfal 8:48]
and he led them astray from the straight path. As soon as they hear the adhan, they stand up. This standing is a form of honoring Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Then they sit down. They do not respond, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hears the call and does not respond, and has no excuse, has no prayer
No, Satan convinces them that this is sufficient from them, that it is honoring Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and sitting. Therefore, the Qur'an was revealed as a healing for what is in the breasts. So, hanging the Qur'an on the walls is the opposite of the purpose for which it was revealed. Added to this is what I mentioned earlier: that it was not the practice of the Salaf. And we fear—and this is a reality, unfortunately—that these people are satisfied with hanging these verses on the walls, and then they do not act upon them. And I mention for such an occasion: when we discuss the matter with which many Muslims are afflicted, including the praying, worshipping people, and especially among them the large merchants, who deal in riba. But they make excuses: "Where do we put our money? We fear for it from theft, from looting, from... and so on." So I say to them: "Where are you from the verse that you hang on the wall:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out
[At-Talaq 65:2]
You are satisfied with only decorating the wall with this verse, but as for acting upon it, no. We want to preserve our money. Where is it, then? What about this verse:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
?! So, decorating the walls by hanging verses is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire. Anyone else?
The student : Excuse me, my Shaykh. Now, the brothers here, the Shaykh gave you from the beginning. Seize the opportunity before it comes to you. Now, there are other questions here. May Allah be pleased with you.
