Some Causes of Divorce and the Treatment Thereof

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence, the Shaykh (may Allah preserve you), in our time, the utterance of divorce has become frequent, and some people have become lax in their regard for it, to the point that it has become their habit. What are the causes in your view? What is the treatment? And what is your guidance for the brothers who have fallen into this?

Answer:
Yes, this is a reality that occurs frequently. Divorce is a reality among many people, for many reasons. Sometimes it comes from the husband, sometimes from the wife, and sometimes from both of them. The wife may be foul-tongued and sharp-tongued, so she curses him and speaks about him in inappropriate terms, and he cannot bear it and divorces her. She may demand things from him that are not obligatory, and she burdens him and tires him, so he divorces her. He may be quick to anger and have little patience, so he cannot bear anything. He may have other matters that have occupied him, burdened him, and disturbed his sleep, so he cannot bear it. He may be consuming intoxicants, so he cannot bear it, and so on, among the causes.
It is obligatory for the one who divorces and the one who is divorced to fear Allah, and for them to cooperate in righteousness and piety. The woman should beware of harming her husband and causing him to fall into what is not appropriate because of the sharpness of her tongue and her excessive demands without right.
It is obligatory for the husband to fear Allah regarding the woman, to give her her rights, and not to wrong her, so that he does not force her to harm him and to demand what is her right, until divorce occurs from him.
It is obligatory for everyone to cooperate in righteousness and piety and to advise one another to truth. The husband should be forbearing and not be hasty. It is obligatory for him to give her her rights and not to force her to demand them or to anger him.
It is obligatory for her, as well, to listen and obey her husband in what is right, to have good conduct, to speak kindly, and to bear some of the shortcomings that occur from the husband. This is due to the saying of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He):
And live with them in kindnessوَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
[al-Nisa:19]; and His saying, the Exalted:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority].وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ
[al-Baqarah:228]; and His saying, the Exalted:
cooperate in righteousness and pietyوَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى
[al-Ma'idah:2].
Therefore, the spouses should cooperate in righteousness and piety, advise one another to truth, and cooperate in good. He should strive to fulfill her rights, be kind to her, and have good conduct with her. She should strive to fulfill his rights, not force him to divorce, and not anger him without right. If cooperation is achieved, divorce will decrease. If cooperation is not achieved, divorce will increase. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone. Yes.
