The Obligation of Congregational Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a questioner from Jordan who says in this question: “Your Eminence! I work in a grocery store all day long, and the call to prayer is made, but I am unable to go to the mosque because I work alone and find it difficult to close the store. The mosque is about half a kilometer away, so if a man were to call out at the top of his voice, he would not be heard. What is the ruling on my praying in the shop or in my grocery store? May Allah reward you.”

Answer:
It is obligatory for you to pray with the congregation and to close the store whenever the time comes. You should not be lax in this matter, for Allah has made it obligatory for you to pray in congregation. Therefore, it is obligatory for you to hasten to do so in obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah says:
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayersحَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ
[al-Baqarah: 238], and He says:
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ
[al-Baqarah: 43]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when a blind man came to him: “O Messenger of Allah! I have no guide to lead me to the mosque. Do I have a dispensation to pray in my house?” He said:
Do you hear the call to prayer?هل تسمع النداء بالصلاة؟
Sahih Muslim 653
He said: Yes. He said:
Then respond.فأجب
.
Therefore, it is obligatory for you and those like you to hasten to pray in congregation and to close the commercial establishment, whether it is a shop, a grocery store, or otherwise, until you pray with your brothers and fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon you, which is performing it in congregation. It is not permissible to be lax in this matter.
