Question:
A letter from one of the female listeners from Jordan, who indicated her name with the initials (F. A.), asking a collection of questions, among which is a question in which she says: I pray the obligatory prayer, meaning the fard and the sunnah, and after finishing the obligatory prayer, I pray four rak'ahs or more as voluntary prayer immediately after every prayer. Is it permissible to pray the voluntary prayer immediately after finishing the obligatory prayer? It has been mentioned in the book Fiqh al-Sunnah that it is recommended to separate the obligatory prayer from the voluntary prayer by the amount of the closing of the prayer. We ask for clarification of this, with thanks.
Answer:
It is the sunnah to separate the voluntary prayer from the obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:. So the best for the Muslim man and woman after the taslim from the obligatory prayer is to say: Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani), then to proceed with the prescribed dhikr Sahih Muslim 594a. This is recommended after all five prayers: Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr, for both men and women.
It is also recommended with this to say:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3553Sahih (Darussalam), ten times, after the Fajr prayer and after the Maghrib prayer. This is an addition specific to these two prayers. It is also recommended for him after that, in all five prayers, to say: . The total is ninety-nine, then he says to complete the hundred Muwatta Malik 20:131. It came in the hadith: . This is a great virtue. It is prescribed for the believing man and woman to maintain this.
It is also recommended after this to recite Ayat al-Kursi: [al-Baqarah: 255]. This is Ayat al-Kursi, this is one verse, the end of it is: [Al-Baqarah 2:255] and the beginning of it is: [Al-Baqarah 2:255]. It is recommended for the believing man and woman to recite it after every prayer.
It is also recommended for him to recite[Al-Ikhlas 112:1] and the two Mu'awwidhat after every prayer, [Al-Ikhlas 112:1], [Al-Falaq 113:1], [An-Nas 114:1]. These three surahs, it is recommended that the believing man and woman recite them after every prayer: Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr. He repeats them three times after Fajr and after Maghrib. He repeats them three times after Fajr specifically and after Maghrib. He repeats them three times when sleeping. When he lies down on his bed, he recites the tasbih, tahmid, and tahlil thirty-three times each, and he concludes it with Allahu Akbar one hundred times, completing it with four and thirty takbirs, three and thirty tahmids, three and thirty tasbихs when sleeping. Instead of (La ilaha illa Allah) at the end, he says (Allahu Akbar). He completes the hundred with (Allahu Akbar). As for after the prayer, he completes it with (La ilaha illa Allah), which is better.
And when sleeping, he also recites Ayat al-Kursi and the three surahs repeated three times when sleeping. This is better. And if he wishes to pray a voluntary prayer after the dhikr, there is no harm. He does not stand up immediately from the day he says taslim, no. After the dhikr, he comes to the voluntary prayer. The best after Zuhr is four. If he prays two as the rawatib, that suffices. If he prays four after Zuhr, that is in it a great virtue, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 2:262. This is a great virtue. As for the rawatib, it is four before Zuhr, meaning two taslims, and one taslim after Zuhr. This is the rawatib, six rak'ahs, four before it and two after it, meaning: two taslims before it and one taslim after it. This is called: the rawatib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain it in the state of residence. If he increased and prayed four after Zuhr, he prayed two taslims after Zuhr, and that is in it a great virtue, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 2:262. It was narrated by the people of the Sunan with a sound chain from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her).
As for after 'Asr, there is no prayer after it. After Fajr, there is no prayer after it. He does not pray after it, neither two nor four. After the 'Asr prayer and after the Fajr prayer, there is no prayer after them.
As for after Maghrib, he prays two, this is the best, the rawatib. And after 'Isha', two, the rawatib. If he prays more, there is no harm. The rawatib is two, one taslim after Maghrib, and two after 'Isha', one taslim, for both men and women. This is the rawatib that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain. If he prays more after Maghrib or after 'Isha', the matter is broad, and praise be to Allah. He prays what he wishes. But the rawatib is two after Maghrib and two after 'Isha'.
And if he wishes to pray many rak'ahs between Maghrib and 'Isha', it is all good. Or after 'Isha', he performs tahajjud for a long time, it is all good. But the rawatib is two after 'Isha' and two after Maghrib. As for 'Asr, there is nothing after it, and Fajr, there is nothing after it. And as for Zuhr, it was mentioned that he prays two after it as rawatib, and if he prays four, that is better as mentioned. We ask Allah for success for everyone. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good. Do you attach your eminence to her saying: the obligatory prayer, and she means the sunnah with the fard?
The Shaykh: The obligatory: Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha', and Fajr. These are the obligatory. Zuhr is four for the resident and two for the traveler. 'Asr is four for the resident and two for the traveler. Maghrib is three for everyone. 'Isha' is two for the traveler and four for the resident. Fajr is two for everyone. These are the fard. And Jumu'ah is two as well for the residents.
As for the voluntary prayers, there is no limit to them. But the rawatib that it is prescribed for the believer to maintain are twelve. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain them in the state of residence and staying: four before Zuhr, two taslims, and two after Zuhr. These are six. Two after Maghrib. These are eight. And two after 'Isha'. These are ten. And two before the Fajr prayer. These are twelve. These are the rawatib, they are called the rawatib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain them in the state of residence.
As for in travel, he used to leave them except for the sunnah of Fajr. He used to leave the sunnah of Zuhr, Maghrib, and 'Isha' in travel. But he would pray the sunnah of Fajr in travel and residence, peace and blessings be upon him.
And as for praying four before 'Asr, it is recommended. It is not rawatib, but it is recommended. Due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 2:263. This is recommended and not rawatib. And if he prays two before Maghrib... two before 'Isha' is also recommended. Due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 1283Sahih (Al-Albani). So if he prays two after the adhan of Maghrib, two after the adhan of 'Isha', or more, it is all recommended and good. But it is not rawatib, it is not from the rawatib. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is the sunnah to separate the voluntary prayer from the obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you prays, let him not join one prayer with another until he speaks or goes out.
O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity.
There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent. There is no power and no strength except by Allah. There is no god but Allah, and we worship none but Him. His is the blessing, His is the favor, and His is the good praise. There is no god but Allah, sincere to Him in religion, even if the disbelievers dislike. O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You have given, and there is no one who can give what You have withheld, and the wealth of the wealthy does not benefit him against You.
It is also recommended with this to say:
None has the right to be worshipped by Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the praise, [He gives life and causes death,] and He has power over all things
Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, thirty-three times; Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, thirty-three times.
There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belong the Kingdom and praise, and He has power over everything
That if the servant says it, his sins will be forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.
It is also recommended after this to recite Ayat al-Kursi:
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
