Fatwa No. ( 14774 )
Q: I am a student in the intermediate stage, and I have come to know, praise be to Allah, the pillars, conditions, and obligations of the prayer, but I have not found among them what our fathers say is a pillar of the prayer, namely that whoever does not say after the taslim: "There is no god but Allah alone, without partner, the King, His is the praise, and He is able to do all things" 10 times, and "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar" 33 times, and they say: whoever does not say these, his prayer is invalid, in addition to their saying: that the voluntary prayer is a pillar, and whoever does not perform it, his prayer is invalid. What is your opinion on this?
A : First: It is prescribed for the one who prays after the obligatory prayer to say: what is established from Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he narrated on the minbar, saying:
It has been reported that 'Abdullah bin Zubair (May Allah be pleased with them) used to recite after Taslim at the conclusion of every Salat (prayer): "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul- mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shai'in Qadir. La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. La ilaha illallahu, wa la na'budu illa iyyahu, Lahun-ni'matu, wa lahul-fadlu, wa lahuth-thana'ul-hasan. La ilaha ilallahu, mukhlisina, lahud-dina, wa lau karihal-kafirun (there is no true god except Allah; He is One. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him is all praise, and He is Powerful over all things. There is no power and might except with (the help of) Allah. There is no God but Allah and we worship none except Him, to Him belongs the bounty and to Him belongs the grace, and to Him belongs all excellent praise; there is no deity but Allah. We reserve our devotion exclusively for Him though the disbelievers may detest it)." Ibn Az-Zubair said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to celebrate Allah's Greatness in those terms after every Salat (prayer). [Muslim] .
Riyad as-Salihin 1417
. It was narrated by Imam Muslim and others. And it is established from al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate at the end of each obligatory Salat (prescribed prayer): "La ilaha illallahu, wahadahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shai'in Qadir. Allahumma la mani'a lima a'taita, wa la mu'tiya lima mana'ta, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi mink-al-jaddu. (There is no true god except Allah, the One, Who has no partner. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Able to do everything. O Allah! Nobody can withhold what You give; and nobody can give what You withhold; and the high status of a person is of no avail against Your Will)."
Riyad as-Salihin 1782
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And it is established from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
The poor came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "The people of wealth have taken the high ranks and the abiding pleasure. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they have surplus wealth with which they perform Hajj and 'Umrah and give charity." He said: "Shall I not inform you of a matter by which, if you take it, you will catch up with those who were before you, and no one after you will catch up with you, and you will be better than those among you except one who does the same? You glorify Allah, praise Him, and say Allahu Akbar after every prayer thirty-three times."
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Also, it is prescribed for the one who prays to maintain the rawatib (regular voluntary prayers), which are ten rak'ahs, as in (the two Sahihs) from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said:
I remember ten Rakat of Nawafil from the Prophet, two Rakat before the Zuhr prayer and two after it; two Rakat after Maghrib prayer in his house, and two Rakat after 'Isha' prayer in his house, and two Rakat before the Fajr prayer and at that time nobody would enter the house of the Prophet. Hafsa told me that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to offer two Rakat after the call maker had made the Adhan and the day had dawned.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1180, 1181
. Second: These dhikr, sunnahs, rawatib, and non-rawatib are recommended (mustahabb) and not obligatory, and whoever does not perform them commits no sin, but he has missed their reward, and his prayer is valid; because Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) did not make obligatory except five prayers in the day and night. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
