Rulings on the prayer before and after Dhuhr
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A questioner says, “May the Shaykh be respected: I ask about the four-rak'ah prayer before Dhuhr and the four-rak'ah prayer after it. What is the virtue of this rawatib? And if I pray four before the prayer with a single taslim, is that permissible or not?”
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
The sunnah before Dhuhr is four rak'ahs of rawatib. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be consistent in performing them. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:. So the sunnah is to pray four before Dhuhr with two taslims, and one after it. If he prays four after it, that is better; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 2:262. This is the best: four before it and four after it with two taslims. Combining them in a single taslim is disliked.
So the sunnah is to pray the four with two taslims before it and after it; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 1295Sahih (Al-Albani). This is the sunnah. Likewise, before 'Asr, he prays four with two taslims. This is the best; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 2:263, meaning: two and two. Likewise, he prays two after 'Isha' and two after Maghrib; because of his action (peace and blessings be upon him). And two before Fajr.
And if he prays many rak'ahs between the two 'Isha' prayers or at night, there is no limited limit for them; because it is a place of worship, a place of voluntary prayer. But the best at night is eleven or thirteen, saying taslim after every two, and making witr with one. This is the best.
And if he prays forty, or for example fifty, or a hundred, or more, and makes witr with one, there is no harm; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1319Sahih (Darussalam), and he did not specify a limit. But the best is to restrict oneself to what he (peace and blessings be upon him) did, which is thirteen or eleven (peace and blessings be upon him), in Ramadan and in other times.
The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you.
