Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Who are the relatives whose maintenance is obligatory?

Answer:
The relatives of the mother and the father.
Q: Only them?
A: The closest, then the next closest, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when he was asked:
to whom should I be dutiful?' 'Your mother,' he replied. He was asked, 'Then whom?' 'Your mother,' he replied. He was asked, 'Then whom?' 'Your mother,' he replied. He was asked, 'Then whom?' He replied, 'Your father.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 5
. So the brothers take precedence over their children, and their children take precedence over the uncles, and the uncles take precedence over their children, and the maternal uncles take precedence over their children, and so on, the closest then the next closest, according to one's ability: with money, or with kind words, or with visiting; all of this is good.
Q: The righteous and the wicked among them?
A: No, the right belongs to the righteous one, and as for the wicked one, his maintenance is: advising him, guiding him to good, and reconciling him; this is part of maintaining ties with him.
Q: If he is an open sinner?
A: Maintaining ties with him means: calling him to Allah, guiding him to good, commanding him to do what is right, and forbidding him from doing what is wrong; all of this is part of maintaining ties with him.
