Fear Allah as much as you are able

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We were a group of friends who gathered to discuss and dialogue about matters of religion and the world. One of the attendees raised a question, asking: Can a Muslim live his life as a Muslim 100% of the time while continuing to coexist and interact with his society, including its positives, negatives, and influences? In other words, if he wishes to stay away from everything Allah has forbidden and enjoy everything He has permitted in His Noble Book, and likewise follow the Sunnah of His Chosen Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what it permits and avoid what it prohibits?
The answers differed, although everyone answered yes, but they differed regarding the percentages. One group claimed that a person is capable of this, meaning that a person can live as a Muslim 100% of the time.
Another group did not agree that a person is capable of living a Muslim life 100% of the time. The perspective of the other group, which did not agree with the 100% figure, was that the strength of society and its influences is multiple, and that there may be many incorrect matters that society nonetheless approves of. This group gave as an example: football, and the state’s [any state] attempt to encourage this game despite its lack of benefit for the youth to the extent that if the youth trained in horsemanship, swimming, and archery, for example. Another example: photography and three-dimensional images. Another example: concerning human food, which is the meat the state imports from abroad. Another example: bank interest. And many other examples were cited.
When the discussion became long and extended, and we agreed on some points and differed on others, we decided to send our question, hoping that we might find the satisfying answer with you?

A: The Muslim is not infallible, and every son of Adam is prone to error, and the best of those who err are the repentant, as stated in the noble hadith. However, it is possible for a Muslim to live in a society while preserving his religion according to his capacity, acting on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[Surat al-Taghabun: 16], and his religion is not blemished by the errors that may occur from him which he did not intend, or which he thought were permissible based on his independent reasoning and the information he had, or by his asking some scholars who issued a ruling on it that did not conform to the pure Shari'ah.
In summary, it is obligatory for the Muslim to fear Allah as much as he can, to forbid what Allah has forbidden for him, and to exert himself in what Allah has made obligatory for him. And if a slip occurs from him, it is obligatory for him to hasten to sincere repentance.
