Working in Certain Trades
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people believe that there are trades that are not honorable, and they rebuke those who work in them, such as cooking, hairdressing, shoemaking, and working in cleaning, among others. Is there any scriptural evidence that confirms the validity of this belief? Do such trades contradict Arab customs and natural dispositions? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: We are not aware of any harm in these trades and similar permissible trades, provided that the worker fears his Lord, is sincere, and does not deceive his clients; due to the generality of the scriptural evidence in this matter, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) when asked which earnings are the purest:Mishkat al-Masabih 2783 narrated by al-Bazzar and authenticated by al-Hakim, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 2072 narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih. Also, because people are in need of these trades and similar ones, so abandoning them and considering them beneath oneself harms the Muslims and necessitates that their enemies perform them.
And whoever works in cleaning must strive to keep his body and clothes free from ritual impurity, and take care to purify whatever is affected by it. And success is from Allah.

A man’s work with his hand and every business transaction which is approved
عمل الرجل بيده وكل بيع مبرورNobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one's own hands. The Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah, David used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor.
ما أكل أحد طعاما قط خيرا من أن يأكل من عمل يده، وكان نبي الله داود يأكل من عمل يدهAnd whoever works in cleaning must strive to keep his body and clothes free from ritual impurity, and take care to purify whatever is affected by it. And success is from Allah.
