The Compilation of the Mushaf on a Single Script

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Is it true that when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab compiled the Qur'an in a single mushaf, he deleted some of the scripts? Or did he establish some recitations over others?
A: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The Qur'an was sent down in seven dialects. So recite what seems easy therefrom.إن هذا القرآن أنزل على سبعة أحرف، فاقرؤوا ما تيسر منه
Sahih Muslim 818a
And the most knowledgeable among the scholars said: They are close in meaning but differ in wording.
And when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was informed of the people's disagreement, and Hudhayfah came to him and said, "The people are on the verge of perishing," he consulted the Companions present in his time, such as 'Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, and others. They advised compiling the Qur'an on a single script so that the people would not differ; so he compiled it and formed a four-member committee for this, with Zayd ibn Thabit as their head. They compiled the Qur'an on a single script, wrote it down, and distributed it to the regions so that the people would adopt it and so that the dispute would cease.
As for the seven recitations or the ten recitations, they are present in the very same thing that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab compiled, in the addition of a letter or the omission of a letter, or elongation, or diacritical marks of the Qur'an; all of this falls within the single script that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab compiled.
The purpose of that was to preserve the speech of Allah and to prevent the people from the disagreement that might harm them and cause fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) among them. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) did not make it obligatory to recite with the seven scripts; rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So recite what is easy for you from itفاقرأوا ما تيسر منه
So the people's compilation on a single script is a good deed, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab is to be thanked for it, as are the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), for what it contains of facilitation and ease, and for cutting off the material of disagreement among the Muslims.
