What is the ruling on one who distorts the Prophetic Sunnah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
His third question—the question of al-Khadhr—from Syria, he says: What is the ruling in the religion regarding one who distorts the noble Sunnah?

Answer:
The Sunnah, which consists of the hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), must be accepted and acted upon, provided the chain of narration is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him). It is not permissible for anyone to distort it according to his own desires or lead it toward his own whims.
Likewise, it is not permissible for anyone to lead the Qur’an toward his own whims. Rather, he must follow what the Qur’an indicates and what the Sunnah indicates, and he must bind himself to that in what Allah has made obligatory and in what Allah has forbidden. He should seek assistance from the words of the known scholars in interpreting the Qur’an and interpreting the hadiths. He has no right to distort the verses of the Qur’an or the Prophetic hadiths according to his own whims, desires, and intentions. No, rather, he is obligated to refer to what the evidence from the verses and hadiths indicates.
He must also refer to what the people of knowledge and faith have said in interpreting the verses and interpreting the hadiths, and in matters that are difficult for him or whose status is ambiguous. He should consult books of language regarding matters related to the Arabic language. As for acting according to his own whims and opinion without referring to the Book and the Sunnah, or distorting the Sunnah or a verse according to his own whims, this is the work of the atheists and the work of the people of innovation who lead the verses and hadiths to their own whims and innovations without right. We ask Allah for safety from that. Yes.
