Q: We ask Your Eminence to explain to us the correct method of tayammum.
A: Valid tayammum is as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [al-Ma'idah: 6]. The prescribed method is one strike for the face and the forearms, and the description of that is that he strikes the earth with his hands one time, then wipes with them his face and his forearms, as in the two Sahihs that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Amir ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) : Sahih Muslim 368a Then he struck the earth with his hands and wiped with them his face and his forearms.
It is a condition that the earth be pure. It is not prescribed to wipe the forearms; rather, wiping the face and forearms is sufficient, based on the aforementioned hadith.
Tayammum takes the place of water in removing ritual impurity, according to the correct opinion. Therefore, if one performs tayammum, he prays with this tayammum the voluntary and obligatory prayers, both the current and future ones, as long as he remains in a state of purity until he becomes ritually impure, or until he finds water if he was lacking it, or until he is able to use it if he was unable to use it. Thus, tayammum is a means of purification that takes the place of water, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named it a means of purification.
A: Valid tayammum is as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it
Shaqiq reported: I was sitting in the company of Abdullah and Abu Musa when Abu Musa said: 0 'Abd al-Rahman (kunya of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud), what would you like a man to do about the prayer if he experiences a seminal emission or has sexual intercourse but does not find water for a month? 'Abdullah said: He should not perform tayammum even if he does not find water for a month. 'Abdullah said: Then what about the verse in Sura Ma'ida:" If you do not find water, betake yourself to clean dust"? 'Abdullah said: If they were granted concession on the basis of this verse, there is a possibility that they would perform tayammum with dust on finding water very cold for themselves. Abu Musa said to Abdullah: You have not heard the words of 'Ammar: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me on an errand and I had a seminal emission, but could find no water, and rolled myself in dust just as a beast rolls itself. I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then and made a mention of that to him and he (the Holy Prophet) said: It would have been enough for you to do thus. Then he struck the ground with his hands once and wiped his right hand with the help of his left hand and the exterior of his palms and his face. 'Abdullah said: Didn't you see that Umar was not fully satisfied with the words of 'Ammar only?
