Exchanging Visits Between Muslim and Non-Muslim Women

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I have some neighbors who are non-Muslims and some who are Muslims, but I have some observations regarding them. What is the ruling on exchanging visits among us?

A: Exchanging visits in such a case, if it is for guidance, advice, and cooperation in righteousness and piety, is good and commanded. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah the Exalted says:يقول الله 
: My love is obligatory for those who love each other for My sake, who visit each other for My sake, who sit together for My sake, and who give to each other for My sake. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with a sound chain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause onlyسبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله وذكر منهم: رجلين تحابا في الله اجتمعا عليه وتفرقا عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 660
, using the example of two men, and the ruling applies to both men and women.
So if the visit is to a Muslim woman, a Christian woman, or another, with the intention of calling to Allah, teaching good, and guiding to good, not with the intention of greed for this world or being lax in the command of Allah, then all of this is good. If a Muslim woman visits her sister in Allah and advises her against tabarruj (displaying adornment) and exposing herself, and against being lax in what Allah has forbidden from other sins, or if she visits a Christian neighbor or a non-Christian such as a Buddhist or the like to advise her, teach her, and guide her, then this is a good thing and falls under the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Religion is advice, religion is advice, religion is advice.الدين النصيحة الدين النصيحة الدين النصيحة
. If she accepts, praise be to Allah, and if she does not accept, she should leave off the visit that yields no benefit.
As for visiting for the sake of worldly matters, play, idle talk, eating, or the like, such a visit is not permissible for disbelieving women, whether they are Christians or otherwise; because this may lead the visitor to corruption in her religion and morals, since disbelievers are our enemies and we hold them in hatred, so it is not befitting for us to take them as confidants or companions. However, if the visit is for the purpose of calling to Allah, encouraging good, and warning against evil, then this is a required matter, as mentioned previously. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in Surat al-Mumtahanah:
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah aloneقَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ
[Al-Mumtahanah 60:4]
